Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born on the 20th of October 1964, is an American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice-president and the highest ranking female official of the United States. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the former attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017 and was a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris started her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was then recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General for California. Harris was elected again in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 to 2021. Harris beat Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for health reform, federal descheduling for cannabis, a pathway for immigrants who are not legal citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. She is well-known for her direct questions to Trump government officials during Senate hearings.
